Synopsis

Behind the Wall, ascension is supposed to be the highest honor a citizen can earn. Nobody
mentions that the honored are never seen again.
Jonas Adler never wanted to be exceptional. Exceptional gets you noticed. But after he nearly
dies on his first real expedition beyond the Wall, something he never asked for opens behind
his eyes: a Ledger that records every Rank he earns — and quietly takes something back for
every line it writes.
Most people climb slowly enough that the cost stays hidden. Jonas isn't climbing slowly. He's
climbing fast enough to draw the attention of the people who decide who gets called home —
and fast enough to make him wonder what, exactly, he's being grown into.
