Synopsis

A Hollow can't hold a Brand. Everyone in Caul knows it.

Riven Crask kept one.

He doesn't know how.

The only person he tells is his sister, Wren, who has spent most of her life keeping the two of them alive. Her advice is simple.

Hide it.

Say nothing.

Hope nobody heard.

Somebody did.

The Houses have spent longer than anyone remembers making sure a Hollow holding a Brand was impossible. Now it has happened, and they don't agree on what to do about it. Some want Riven dead. Some want to keep him. One only wants to know how.

While they run, Riven tries to understand the impossible thing he's carrying. Before long he finds himself asking the one question nobody else seems willing to ask.

If a Hollow can hold a Brand... why was the rule there in the first place?
