Would you strap yourself into weaponised mining mech to fight your way to freedom? 

There is one rule on Asphodel: if you're not useful to someone, you die. Some enter the brutal mining operation, others clean or cook, and most end up someone else' 'girlfriend'. But Chione shouldn't be here. She was about to debut into high society when her father was accused of undermining the war. He was summarily executed and, by Kratian Martial law, his sentence of treason passed to his daughter.

A chance of salvation comes when the war reaches Asphodel. A brilliant mechanist retrofits the mining mechs into killing machines, and the Warden conscripts five prisoners to become the first pilots in a new penal battalion -- the shtrafbats

Asphodel has a way of changing people, and no matter how much Chione resists, she is no different from the rest. When she's lost everything she's ever had, all she has now is what the iron chains have made of her. Then she'll have to ask herself what feelings are truly her own.
