The Proof of Small Things
Synopsis
In the village of Oakhaven, thirteen-year-old Matilda Voss notices that numbers behave strangely near the old railway cutting. Primes cluster. Sequences repeat. Fractions decompose in patterns that her textbooks do not explain. When she draws the pattern in chalk on the kitchen floor, her mother — a baker — sees bread rise in golden spirals. When she hums it, the parish church clock loses a minute and gains a second. When she traces it into the mud of the cutting, the nightingales stop singing and start counting. A retired mathematician arrives from Cambridge. A geomancer arrives from Cornwall. A cartographer arrives with maps of places that do not yet exist. Together, they discover that the pattern is not mathematics. It is an invitation. The Proof of Small Things is a story about how the universe quietly tests the people who pay attention — and what happens when a child decides to answer.
