Devils Wages

Here's the rewrite:

In the age before the empire, the four angels of Selene — goddess of the moon and creator of all things — fought that great evil, the Devil, in a battle that cracked the sky and split the world of Magog. When the dust settled the world had been remade. The sun became a thing of danger and fear. The moon became the light men lived by. Humanity woke at night and slept at day, built their civilization beneath Selene's silver glow, and called it salvation.

But the Devil could not be killed.

So he was divided into five fragments. Five devil vessels. Five cursed bearers scattered across the world, each carrying a piece of him within them. The empire Selene left behind has spent a thousand years hunting and capturing them.

Quinn never prayed because he believed. He prayed because you don't spit in the face of the only god there is.

He was a village boy from Gray Hollow with a sick mother, a younger brother, and one plan — pass the Holy Knight trials, earn enough gold, and fix what gold can fix. Not glory. Not faith. Just money and what money could do. A hard but achievable dream. 

His vision of his future was cut short when he awakened a devil fragment. The Devil's Heart. A black sun burning where his heart used to be, fueled not by faith, for he never had any, but by something he's had in abundance his entire life.

Hate.

Now the empire he wanted to serve wants him dead. The goddess he never believed in would see him destroyed. And the power growing in his chest doesn't care about any of that — it just wants to burn, and every time Quinn feels something, it gets a little stronger.

He didn't ask for this. He didn't choose it. But it chose him. And it is starting to feel less like a curse and more like a blessing.

In a world built to destroy everything he is, Quinn has two choices. Burn. Or be burned.
