I'd have let that god live, but I had bills to pay

I'm Drake, and I'm completely powerless. But, even someone without powers can descend into a place called the Tar Pits and fight monsters. It wasn't something I wanted to do but when my sister got sick and working three jobs wasn't enough to pay her medical bills, I didn't have a choice.

Now sometimes, gods will touch someone while on a raid and they'll choose that person as a Champion. You gotta show off, prove you’re worth it, y'know, brown-nose. On the most recent, routine raid, one of the strongest in the pantheon joined us. The Kirin God. All he had to do was touch me and my money problems would disappear. It would have cost him nothing. Unfortunately, I lack the schmoozing gene. That jerk refused to do anything but lord his powers over all of us and show off how high and mighty he was. 

During one of the fights, things went wrong and he got badly injured. The god was dying in front of me. I could've saved him . . . but I didn't. You see, you get experience points and even powers based on what you kill. And, well… How much experience points do you think a god has? So the choice becomes: save him and maybe get his blessing, or become a god myself . . . What would you choose in my shoes? If you answer honestly then you and I will get along just fine.

I got it—all of it. All of the power I could ever need. That means fighting stronger monsters, facing off against demon lords, and fighting champions of other gods. More power, more money, maybe a chance to get my hands on a precious panacea to cure my sister. And who knows, maybe soon I'll be paying off those debts, too.
