The Wrong Kind of Gifted
Synopsis
Everyone in the world can feel the mana. Renn can't.
He's a charity student at an academy built on the felt gift — bottom of every list, three years running — with the one talent nobody wants: he can measure magic. Time it. Count it. Prove it. In a tradition where feeling is sacred, that isn't a skill. It's heresy.
Then a punishment detail sends him into the sealed lower archive, and behind a door that opens only when measured, he finds a relic that has waited in the dark for a thousand years — in the lap of the last person who carried it.
Now there's a voice behind his eyes that speaks in cold exact letters, a number that climbs every time he leans on it, and a bargain no sane person would take: the relic is broken, and only a mind that measures can rebuild it — experiment by experiment — each repair making Renn stronger, and the thing in his chest more whole.
It never lies to him. That's the worst part. It says it was built to complete what was left incomplete.
He's going to measure his way to the bottom of what that means — past the school that names him blasphemer, the hunter in Warden gray, the rival who'd kill for what's killing him — down to the floor of the world, where careful, lawful, brilliant people once did everything right, and ended the world doing it.
Magic is a method. A method can be learned. And some work should never be finished.
