Synopsis

Ray is eighteen and homeless. She walked out on her roommates because she didn't want to follow them into trouble, and while she understands why her mom can't take her back due to a lease restriction, her mom doesn't know Ray's actually living on the streets. Ray is protecting her mother by keeping the truth hidden. She survives by dumpster diving before dawn, living in a tent since her van got stolen, staying invisible.

While salvaging a dumpster, Ray finds a good used bike—a real win. As she prepares to take her findings to a consignment shop, a man suddenly grabs her wrist with violent intent. Just as he's about to kill her, another man intervenes and defeats him. But this stranger doesn't release her—he's an alien, and he pulls her onto a spaceship.

Aliens heal Ray's broken wrist and she thinks she broke her rescuer's fragile foot. Then the alien who saved her touches her mind, and Ray experiences memores of a future that hasn't happened yet. She sees herself as a soldier. A rescuer. A trader who trades for slaves so healers can free them. She sees herself married to this alien years from now. The connection is profound, undeniable.

When it ends, his healer tells her the truth: their minds are permanently linked. If they don't marry, they'll both die.

Ray now knows she's seen the future, which makes her a warrior in an ancient War. 300 years of a fight, spanning 13 galaxies. Adia, a scientist who discovered the fuel that allowed them to travel here, saw the future and saved worlds from Eriganh's world destroyers.

The final battle of the War is happening in the very yard Ray sees through the clear red-violet hull.

Ray can't fight in that final battle. But, she has to be in that yard to take the Red Cube, for another, harder battle.

Only Ray knows the truth: there are two other major players. Two other wars coming. Wars that no one else has seen yet.

Only Ray understands what's really about to happen. She was brave in that other future. But, this time, the bad guys are onto her, so she lost the advantage she had of being the surprise warrior. There's no guarantee that anyone will win, this time. The blood on her sleeping bag is mute testimony of her willingness to fight, to send her assailant to jail. Can she be as brave as her middle-aged self was?
