22nd century. Earth is divided into supranational blocs fighting over the planet and, increasingly, the solar system.

Aurelian Aránguiz is born poor in Tierra del Fuego, marked by the insult “veneco” and by a lack of opportunity. To lift his family out of debt, he enters the Lumina trafficking network, rises, and falls: arrested and convicted before turning twenty. The military programme that rehabilitates him turns him into something else.

Then the century comes crashing down on him. An attack kills his parents. Argentina, under Giovanni Damián’s dictatorship, invades Chile. From the southern resistance, he emerges as a leader almost without meaning to, and in the middle of the occupation he becomes entangled with Candela Grosso, an Argentine officer with a son no one knows about and a loyalty she no longer knows where to place.

Far from there, others are moving the pieces: a secret Europe resurrects a Roman from the 1st century and crowns him Caesar; a forbidden technology brings Simón Bolívar back, and with him the idea of a united America; a Eurasian federation colonises the planets; and an artificial intelligence begins calculating a world without humans.
