The Crown of Thorns
Synopsis
Ten years ago, Cassandra Thornfield was taken by the Crown in the name of protection.
In the frozen borderlands of Ashmere, she was a count’s daughter with a sharp tongue, a dead mother, and strange visions no priest could explain. Then an imperial decree turned her into a Pupil of the Crown, a polished phrase for a gilded hostage. Raised beneath the watchful eyes of the Empress, Cassandra learned what every girl at court must learn: silence can be armor, obedience can be theater, and a smile can be sharper than a blade.
Now, summoned into the heart of the Eldrath Empire, Cassandra is expected to become exactly what the court has shaped her to be. Devout. Grateful. Useful.
But the visions have not stopped. Ancient memories stir beneath her skin, whispering of a throne she has never seen and a crown that feels less like a blessing than a sentence. As Empress Isolde binds her name to prophecy and the imperial succession closes around her, Cassandra finds herself caught between two princes: Arthur, the golden heir who offers her a future beside the throne, and Aurelian, the soldier-son who once climbed through a winter window and gave her a knight that could never move in a straight line.
In Aureum, every blessing has a price, every vow hides a blade, and every act of love may become a political weapon.
To survive the court, Cassandra must learn the oldest rule of power: girls may be moved like pieces, but some pieces reach the other side of the board.
