Synopsis

The bioweapon didn't level the cities. It left the factories standing, the data centers humming, the nuclear plants intact — and took almost every adult. It also left the children: those who hadn't yet turned eight when the catastrophe came.

Ten years passed. A generation grew up that had never seen a human being read a book. Knowledge died with the adults — and now it is rarer than fuel.

Andriy sat out the end of the world in the one place nothing could reach: the middle of the ocean, with his wife and little daughter. On a quiet island off the coast of dead Europe, a man might live out his old age.

But rumors drift across the sea of a land where the electricity still burns. And Andriy knows that sooner or later he'll go there — even if the price turns out to be too high.
