When Lazuli finds a body buried beneath the roots of a red tree, she doesn't find a corpse.

She finds a pulse.

She doesn't know what he is. Only that his heartbeat is too slow to be human and too steady to be dying. She stays anyway. Through the winter, through the hunger, through everything that comes after. That decision costs her more than she ever planned to give.

Zael wakes up with no name and no memory of what he was before the fall. What he finds instead is a girl with blue hair who teaches him to eat, to hide, to flinch at the right sounds. What he finds, without meaning to, is something worth staying for.

The world doesn't let them keep it.

Pulled apart by a nobleman who sees power as something to be bought and driven deeper by a king whose reach has no edges, Zael and Lazuli are forced into marble halls where everyone belongs to someone else's plan. The further in they go, the more it takes from them. Not just blood, though there's plenty of that. Something quieter. Harder to name. Harder to get back.

This is not a story about an angel learning to be human.

It's a story about two broken things holding each other together, and how long that can last before the world pulls them apart for good.
