Long ago, an ancient race stole humans from Earth. Enslaved for centuries, they rose up, took their captors' technology, and transcended what they had been. Now they are coming home — and to them, humanity is an infestation to be cleansed.

Dugan of Valukaa has walked the earth for fifteen hundred years. Once known as the Lord of Ash, he razed a city with his own hands and has spent every century since trying to outrun the memory. When whispers of the Orbas — a weapon built to exterminate humankind — surface among the angelic hierarchy, Dugan is forced out of hiding to confront the brother he abandoned and the question that haunts every immortal: what is the point of redemption when damnation follows every choice?

He will not face it alone. Four strangers are being pulled toward the same war: a former MI6 officer betrayed by her organization, a surgeon who crossed a line no physician should cross with deadly consequences, a young woman remade by grief into something she does not recognize, and a boy in rural France who returns home to his parents' bodies and wakes powers that tear angels from the sky.

They will find that the righteous commit atrocities, that good and evil are only a matter of perspective, and that the cost of doing good may be more than any of them can pay. They must learn to trust each other, and together they may save the world — or be its undoing. For they know not the roles they are to play in the wars to come.
