Synopsis
Jim is just the groundskeeper at Riordan Academy for the Magically Gifted. He rakes leaves. Mucks out dragon pens. Fixes broken windows after “minor magical incidents.”
He also fought in a war the magisters pretend never really happened.
When a student turns up dead and the Grand Magister calls it an “accident,” Jim recognises the scorch marks for what they are: Umbar steel. Ember blades. The kind that don’t leave survivors.
The faculty choose denial. The students chase glory. The Games are about to begin.
Jim chooses to dig.
Now, with a battered sword under his bed and a dragon who trusts him more than the professors ever did, the academy’s least respected staff member might be the only thing standing between a school full of chosen ones… and a very real war.
